The wear layer is the part of manufactured flooring which actually endures foot traffic. The wear layer may (1) provide the appearance of the flooring or (2) provide the protection for the aesthetic layer.
As the surface layer, the quality of the wear layer is undoubtedly among the most important aspects of flooring. The beauty of your flooring will be ruined if the wearlayer fails. The quality of the wear layer will influence the price of the product. The initial appearance of a floor with a cheap wear layer will be the same as the initial appearance of an expensive wear layer. For example, a low-grade residential luxury vinyl tile may offer a wear layer which is only 4 mils thick while a high-grade commercial luxury vinyl tile may offer a wear layer which is 40 mils thick. Daily wear and tear manifest the crucial differences.
Solid flooring (e.g., granite tile or VCT) does not have a wear layer.
