mils

Mils is the plural form of mil.  A mil is a unit of measurement equal to 1/1,000 of an inch or 1 inch equals 1,000 mils (e.g., 2 mils thick or 40 mils thick).

  • 16 mils = 0.016" or 1/64 inch
  • 31 mils = 0.031" or 1/32 inch
  • 63 mils = 0.063" or 1/16 inch
  • 110 mils = 0.110"
  • 125 mils = 0.125" or 1/8 inch
  • 170 mils = 0.170"
  • 250 mils = 0.250" or 1/4 inch
  • Example:  A standard sheet of 8.5-inch by 11-inch office paper is 4 mils thick.
  • Example:  The plastic films Glad Cling Wrap or Saran Premium Wrap, which are used to protect food, are about 0.5 mils thick.

Mils is the common increment of measurement for the wear layer of flooring products.
