Janka ball test

The Janka ball test measures the force required and impact created by a steel ball on the surface of the hardwood.  The Janka hardness rating indicates how easily an impression can be made in the surface of hardwood flooring. The higher the rating, the more resistant the wood will be to dents.  That is, softer wood is more susceptible to dents.  Hardwood flooring products are generally ranked by specie.

If you accidentally drop a glass on your new hardwood floor, will the impact of the glass create an unsightly dent in your wood?  Countless products (including hardwood flooring) can be rated according to hardness.
