Face weight is a measurement in ounces of the face yarn from a 3-foot by 3-foot area, which is one square yard. Face weight is calculated in accordance with method D-5848 by American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM).
Face weight does not include the weight of a carpet's backing. Although face weight is not a measurement of density, face weight increases with density and with pile height.
The price of carpet normally increases with face weight. A low-quality carpet may have a 20-ounce face weight. A high-quality carpet may have a 60-ounce face weight.
Face weight (when all other factors are equal) influences a carpet's resistance to crushing. Heavier face weights lend toward better crush resistance. As a result, for our hotel and other hospitality customers, we will recommend corridor carpet with a face weight of 36+ ounces and recommend guest room carpet with a face weight of 30+ ounces.
