Army Ranger Hero
We were recently approached by a special client, an Army Ranger war hero. This special ops veteran was wounded in battle and now faces the daily challenges of quadriplegic paralysis. But, his injury did not take his inner strength nor leadership. He has started the nation's first spinal injury therapy center that is owned by a veteran who suffers from the same affliction. This Tampa therapy center in fully committed to assisting patients in rebuilding muscle tone, balance, and neurological sensitivity. The center assists both civilians and veterans.
The physical therapy patients need a floor with cushion and grip. In addition to high-tech motion assistance equipment, some patients also work with free weights. Naturally, the center desired a product that could be easily maintained. The perfect flooring for this client was solid rubber. (Carpet would offer cushion and cost less, but carpet would not perform as successfully.)
Rubber Tile Selected
We supplied and installed Centaur's Rubberflex Speckled "S" rubber (color: 10% Speckle Grey). This American-made, solid, vulcanized rubber tile measured 8 mm or 0.315 inch thick. Each interlocking puzzle tile measured about 24" x 24", so that each piece of puzzle flooring covers approximately 4 square feet. The interlocking sides allow for a fast DYI installation.
Perfect for Impacts
The new floor needed to be able to absorb the impact of a steel plate that might drop and be able to soften the impact of a person's fall. This type of rubber flooring is made from recycled tires. The flexible nature of rubber flooring makes it popular with professional gyms, fitness training sites, private weight rooms, and playgrounds.
We abutted the rubber's edge by installing Burke's solid black transition to the existing vinyl composition tile (VCT). The edging of the rubber was ADA compliant.
Benefits of Recycled Rubber
The features of rubber include:
- Sound absorbent
- Shock absorbent
- Slip resistant when wet or dry
- Extremely durable
- Easy maintenance
- Contributes toward LEED points
Customer Satisfaction and Personal Satisfaction
Providing flooring for this project came with special satisfaction. After the center was operational, we returned to take photographs and witnessed the facility in use. The courage and determination displayed by these patients is inspirational.
